چکیده

We study the distribution of the durations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the unified model of short and long GRBs recently proposed by Yamazaki, Ioka, and Nakamura. Monte Carlo simulations show clear bimodal distributions, with lognormal-like shapes for both short and long GRBs, in a power-law as well as a Gaussian angular distribution of the subjets. We find that the bimodality comes from the existence of the discrete emission regions (subjets or patchy shells) in the GRB jet. To explain other temporal properties of short and long GRBs, the subjet parameters should depend on the angle in the whole jet. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts — gamma rays: theory

Investigation on the Bimodal Distribution of the Duration of Gamma-ray Bursts from BATSE Light Curves

We have investigated the bimodal distribution of the duration of BATSE gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by analyzing light curves of 64 ms time resolution. We define the average pulse width of GRBs from the auto-correlation function of GRB profiles. The distribution of the average pulse width of GRBs is bimodal, suggesting that GRBs are composed of long-pulse GRBs and short-pulse GRBs. The average pulse...

Red-shift Distribution of Gamma-ray Bursts and Their Progenitors

Gamma ray bursts have been divided into two classes, long-soft gamma ray burst and short-hard gamma ray burst according to the bimodal distribution in duration time. Due to the harder spectrum and the lack of afterglows of short-hard bursts in optical and radio observations, different progenitors for short-hard bursts and long-soft bursts have been suggested. Based on the X-ray afterglow observ...

The Peak Energy Distribution of the Νfν Spectra and the Implications for the Jet Structure Models of Gamma-ray Bursts

We study the peak energy (Ep) distribution of the νFν spectra of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and X-ray flashes (XRFs) with a sample of 57 bursts observed by High Energy Transient Explorer 2 (HETE2) French Gamma Telescope and discuss its implications for the jet structure models. Combining the observed Ep distribution of HETE–2 GRBs/XRFs with that of BATSE GRBs, we find that the observed Ep distribu...

Peak–energy Distribution of the Νfν Spectrum and Implications for the Jet Structure Models of Gamma–ray Bursts

We study the peak–energy (Ep) distribution of the νFν spectrum of gamma–ray bursts (GRBs) and X–ray flashes (XRFs) with a sample of 37 bursts observed by HETE–2/FREGATE, and discuss its implications for the jet structure models. Combining the observed Ep distribution of HETE–2 GRBs/XRFs with that for BATSE GRBs, we find that the observed Ep distribution for GRBs/XRFs is a bimodal one peaking at...

On the Bimodal Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Kouveliotou et al. (1993) recently confirmed that gamma-ray bursts are bimodal in duration. In this paper we compute the statistical properties of the short (≤ 2 s) and long (> 2 s) bursts using a method of analysis that makes no assumption regarding the location of the bursts, whether in the Galaxy or at a cosmological distance. We find the 64 ms channel on BATSE to be more sensitive to short ...
